There are two types of diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes
- People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, also called “childhood diabetes” do not produce insulin on their own and usually have this condition from childhood. The cause of childhood diabetes is usually the drinking of cow’s milk.
- Insulin is a hormone made by beta cells in the pancreas. When we eat, insulin is released into the blood stream where it helps to move glucose from the food we have eaten into cells to be used as energy.
- Without insulin, the sugar (that fuels all of our cells) from foods that are consumed cannot be escorted into the cells that make up the body. Type 1 diabetics need to take insulin regularly and monitor their blood glucose levels for the rest of their lives.
